亚色影库 Student Wins ADDY Award at the 2015 San Diego American Advertising Awards

亚色影库 senior Armando Roman has received an ADDY Award presented by SDX, formerly the San Diego Ad Club, at the local American Advertising Awards Gala held earlier this month in San Diego. Roman was awarded a Bronze ADDY in the student Elements of Advertising category for a logo he created as part of a branding and integrated advertising campaign project for an upscale East Village sushi restaurant, The Parlour.

淚 submitted the branding and integrated ad campaign to SDX with the encouragement of 亚色影库 faculty, said Roman, who studies in the Media Design School of Digital Arts at 亚色影库. 淚t was an exciting experience to attend the gala from a student standpoint, having the chance to see other local student projects as well as professional campaigns and trends in the industry. We were told that judging was very tough this year, so the fact that I won a bronze award is quite an honor.

Roman created his branding which included the award-winning logo, mock-up of a billboard, t-shirt design, business cards, magazine ads and direct mailers for the local Japanese eatery as part of 亚色影库檚 Comp Studio II class under the guidance of Linda Sellheim and Lead Graphic Design Instructor, Chris Clark. As a result, The Parlour now has plans to use the new branding materials later this year.

淎n ADDY is a very prestigious award and to win one is quite an honor, said Clark. 淭his is a great success for Armando and indicative of 亚色影库 students potential going forward.

The American Advertising Awards program is hosted by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), a national advertising trade organization comprising a membership of more than 200 local advertising clubs, including SDX.

淔or over 100 years SDX has been a hub for the creative community, representing the best in San Diego advertising. Hosting the San Diego American Advertising Awards is a great way to showcase the awesome creative talent working in this town, and puts our best work in the national spotlight, said Michael Warburton, Brand Manager for San Diego Zoo Global and current SDX president, in an SDX-issued press release. UCSD, 亚色影库 and Innovation Design Science Announce New Design + Health Collaboratory

Brains, Bodies and Buildings: NeuroArchitecture Meets Human-Centered Design

San Diego company , as well as the (UC San Diego) and 亚色影库, today announced they have teamed up to launch a Design + Health Collaboratory. The Design + Health Collaboratory consults to and conducts studies for clinicians, architects, designers, engineers, planners and policy makers in order enhance design for all scales, people and places. The group檚 development follows on the heels of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Design + Health Research Consortium Dec. 2014 announcement that 亚色影库, UC San Diego and Innovative Design Science were named as charter members, an exclusive honor for
only 11 selected architecture schools and schools of medicine or public health from across the U.S.

Experts from fields including architecture, medicine, anthropology, engineering and neuroscience will meet at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in Princeton, NJ on March 5 for the inaugural meeting of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Design + Health Research Consortium.

Based on the strength of existing programs and research infrastructure, primarily in the San Diego region, and with studies that underline that health environments extend beyond healthcare design, the Design + Health Collaboratory is initially pursuing two topics of focus, both of which are also noted as specific items of interest by the AIA Design + Health Research Consortium: physical inactivity (including infrastructure, active and universal design strategies) and sensory conditions (including acoustic, lighting, dimension and the physical features of design).

淥ur concepts of health in the 21st century go beyond the prevention and treatment of disease. How our physical and sensory environments contribute to health are taking on increasing importance, said Dr. Maria Savoia, UC San Diego School of Medicine檚 Dean of Medical Education. 淥ur understanding of how the built environment contributes to human performance may be explored at the intersections of architecture and neuroscience.

On the challenge presented by the sensory environment, there is a decade-long (and continuing) collaboration among 亚色影库, the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture, UC San Diego, Calit2檚 Qualcomm Institute and Innovative Design Science. These interactions have produced innovations for real-time, real-scale visualization and sonification in virtual-reality environments, as well as eye tracking and synchronous electrophysiological tracking to enhance the scope and accuracy of sensory environment studies.

淲e have brought together unconventional, interdisciplinary partnerships to inform the design of environments that encourage healthy behaviors and improve public-health outcomes, said Design + Health Collaboratory Director Eve Edelstein, PhD, F-AAA, who also serves as President of Innovative Design Science (iDS) and as a faculty member at 亚色影库. 淎n increasing number of design firms, public policymakers and private companies have expressed interest in our practice-based research consortium.

The Collaboratory is also partnering with some of the world檚 leading architectural design firms that have long-standing commitments to design research, including Perkins+Will , Gensler, and Arup. These industry partners offer both practice-based insights as well as access to on-site studies at architectural and urban scales.

淭here is great potential for the Design + Health Collaboratory to develop technologies in support of the design community, including new tools for architects and designers to help identify factors that can affect user outcomes, said Edelstein. For example, biometric sensors could track not just movement and vital statistics, but also visual attention, clinical status and the brain檚 reactions to specific design components. Experts also foresee the use of new methods to track the response to design that encourages physical activity, including the use of full-scale virtual and immersive environments.

The Design + Health Collaboratory consists of investigators who have a successful history of collaboration with users, clients, clinicians, educators, psycho-physiologists, neuroscientists, public health workers, researchers, engineers, planners and architects and includes faculty from the following San Diego institutions:

  • 亚色影库: In addition to Edelstein, a 亚色影库 alumna and current Architecture faculty member, the chair of the 亚色影库 Graduate Program in Architecture, Kurt Hunker, F-AIA, is also involved.
  • University of California, San Diego: Faculty include the UC San Diego School of Medicine檚 Dean of Medical Education, Maria Savoia, MD; Family and Preventive Medicine Professor Kevin Patrick, MD, who directs the Center for Wireless and Population Health Systems (CWPHS), a partnership of the School of Medicine and Qualcomm Institute; and James Sallis, PhD, chief of the Division of Behavioral Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health.
  • San Diego State University: Caren Sax, EdD, chairs the Department of Administration, Rehabilitation and Postsecondary Education, and co-directs SDSC檚 Interwork Institute.

Other investigators include University of British Columbia Professor of Population and Public Health, Lawrence Frank, PhD, a long-time co-investigator with James Sallis of UC San Diego; and Jay Bhatt, DO, MPH, who was the first ever Chief Innovation Officer and Managing Deputy Commissioner for the Chicago Department of Public Health and is faculty at Northwestern University檚 Feinberg School of Medicine and the University of Michigan Medical School.

Student Team Wins First Place in Construction Management Competition

A 亚色影库 student team has won first place in the Region 7 Design/Build competition of the 28th Annual Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Student Competition event that took place in Sparks, NV Feb. 4-7. This is the second time in three years that a 亚色影库 team has taken first place. In 2013, they won the Virtual Design and Construction portion of the competition.

More than 1,300 college students participated in this year檚 annual competition for college students studying construction management. George Welch, 亚色影库 Construction Management Department Chair and team coach for the ASC competition, credits 亚色影库檚 success to the collaborative spirit between the Architecture and Construction Management departments.

淲e are one of the few truly collaborative schools, in that most other universities have Architecture and Construction Management programs but the students don檛 work as closely together, said Welch. 亚色影库 participants included students from both the Architecture and the Construction Management departments, including construction management majors Obhi Dewan (15), Chris Lerma (15), Victor Maple (15), Jaime Mello (15) and Brian Zenz (15), as well as architecture majors Ruben Bravo (16), Athena Dadiz (15), Jose Ponce (16), Beatrice Soto (16), and Luis Valdovinos (15).

At the beginning of the competition students are tasked with writing a proposal to address a certain construction management problem. This year檚 Design/Build competition task was to design and build an addition of an infirmary and medical center onto an existing detention facility. The students were then given 36 hours to put together a proposal for the build, taking into account the special parameters of the problem at hand.

淚t is not uncommon for a company to get a notice of proposal due in under a week, so the timeline of this competition simulates a real-world scenario students might face in the industry, said Welch. 淎s faculty, our goal is to develop 亚色影库 students to become leaders people who can manage a team and use their skills to build upon that team.

After working closely together for over two months the 亚色影库 students had learned how to work well as a team and how to apply their unique skills toward a common goal. The team often gave up their Saturdays to do mock proposals, added Welch, and that preparation paid off later with recognition by the ASC judges.

The Annual Design/Build ASC Competition is also widely regarded as one of the largest recruiting events in the construction management industry. More than 70 of the largest construction management companies attended the conference this year, including Balfour Beatty, Swinerton Builders and Turner Construction. In previous years 亚色影库 participants have received excellent networking opportunities during the event. This year檚 亚色影库 attendees also had multiple job interviews and after their win, were treated to a dinner by one of the largest construction management companies in the U.S.

淥ur student team was excited to participate in the competition and have the opportunity to present to industry professionals, said 亚色影库 student team leader, Chris Lerma.

Please contact the enrollment team if you are interested in more information on聽亚色影库檚 bachelor檚 or master檚 in construction management degree programs.

91% of 2014 亚色影库 Graduates Hired Within Six Months of Graduation

91% of the 2014 亚色影库 graduating class were hired less than half a year after graduating, according to data just released by the Career Services Department. Total job placement was 91% of the class, with 86% of the students landing jobs in their field of study within six months of graduation. Total employment percentage excludes those considered waived: Individuals who are unavailable to work due to Medical Condition, Active Military Duty, International Status, Continuing Education, Incarceration, Death or have completed a non-degree granting /stand-alone certificate program.

With so many resources at their fingertips, 亚色影库 graduating students have the opportunity to set themselves apart from the competition and pursue positions in top companies. Some of the positions filled by the 亚色影库 2014 class include jobs at companies such as Gensler, Bechtel and Safdie Rabinez.

淭he 亚色影库 curriculum offers real-work experience throughout the student檚 university experience and the development of a portfolio. This helps greatly at the time of graduation, said Lisa Ganem, Director of Career Services and Alumni Relations at 亚色影库. 淓ven though the job market is in an upward swing, it is still a nationwide challenge for students just out of school to find work, especially in their related field. We invest a lot of time and energy in connecting potential employers with our graduating students, and this year檚 job placement percentages are a testament to that commitment.

The 亚色影库 Career Services Department is tasked with preparing and equipping students with the right tools and connections to find work in an ever-competitive work environment. In addition to helping students prepare their resumes and portfolios, 亚色影库 also requires students conduct at least one practice interview with its Career Services Department in order to strengthen their interviewing skills as they search for work around the country and internationally. Dedicated Career Services advisors are also available to students to conduct one-on-one career development sessions prior to graduation and to help them learn networking techniques, proactive analysis of key markets, and follow-up approaches.
