SAN DIEGO”June 2, 2015”ÑÇɫӰ¿â (ÑÇɫӰ¿â) students and the local San Diego chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) showcased the unique architecture and design trade tradition of ˜napkin sketching™ during the that took place at ÑÇɫӰ¿â on Friday, May 29. The live and silent auctions raised a total of more than $7,600, the proceeds of which will help fund AIAS scholarships and programs for deserving architecture students.

œThe event was a big success, said David Garcia, a ÑÇɫӰ¿â architecture undergraduate and fundraising chair for the AIAS event. œPersonally, this project means a lot to me, and not just because of the time and involvement, but because this is a nice way to bring students and their favorite architects together, even if it™s just through a sketch. Plus, since it™s a fundraiser, the proceeds have been a great help to the success of the chapter.

The project began as œa sketch for a sketch, with ÑÇɫӰ¿â students working diligently on their own napkin sketches to capture the attention of prominent architects. Students then mailed their sketches to targeted architects along with a request for an original sketch that could be auctioned during the AIAS event.

Attendees of the live auction had the opportunity to bid on original work and ideas hand-drawn on napkins by prominent U.S. and international architects, including Sean Godsell, Thom Mayne, Cesar Pelli and Robert Venturi. Individual napkins were auctioned for hundreds of dollars, with the top bids as follows:

1. ÑÇɫӰ¿â faculty member and San Diego-based architect Kurt Hunker: $500

2. Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas: $475

3. Iraqi-British architect based in London, Zaha Hadid: $460

4. Iraqi-British architect based in London, Zaha Hadid: $455

5. Philadelphia-based architect, Robert Venturi: $370
